Blood & Marrow Transplant Program
Blood and bone marrow stem cell transplant is a potentially curative treatment for patients with a variety of hematological disorders, including leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and even some solid tumors such as breast cancer.
The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program (BMT) is a unique joint venture between UCSD Medical Center and Sharp Memorial Hospital. These two healthcare entities have joined together to bring the latest in technology and clinical expertise to the San Diego community.
The BMT Program is located in the new Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center in La Jolla, where translational medicine takes place, uniting the cutting edge clinical trials and research with the daily practice of medicine.
UCSD Medical Center offers the only Blood and Marrow Transplantation program in the region that is affiliated with a renowned School of Medicine and accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Hematopoietic Cell Therapy (FACT). Accreditation by FACT is the patient's assurance that a BMT program has passed rigorous standards regarding the qualifications and experience of staff, quality management and patient volume.
Since 1989, the expert team of transplant physicians affiliated with this program have performed over 1000 BMT procedures at the UCSD Thornton Hospital in La Jolla. Autologous (using a patient’s own stem cells), related allogeneic (usually a sibling) and matched unrelated transplants are all performed, and if appropriate, a cord or double cord transplant may be offered as well.
